A Chat With Kaleidoscope

Kai Oszlai
April 12, 2026
(Issue 6)

An upcoming band, these studs do everything from Laufey to Arctic Monkeys to Tool. They were kind enough to hang out for an afternoon filled with music debates, insider lore, and many new song recommendations. Happy to say that I've indoctrinated the youth with Sevendust once again! Look out for Kaleidoscope at their upcoming gigs around Markham and Oshawa because they truly are one-of-a-kind.

KO: How would you describe the type of band you are?

Kaleidoscope: As a band, we’d like to consider ourselves very multifaceted, just like a Kaleidoscope is! We’re kaleidoscopic! Our band plays many different genres including different intensities of rock, punk, pop, and even some R&B.

KO: Are there any musicians or bands that inspire your work?

Kaleidoscope: When we first started, Arctic Monkeys was a huge inspiration; a lot of our earlier cover songs were from them. As our band has grown, our inspirations started to reflect the changes our band was going through. Currently, we’re inspired by artists like Muse, Radiohead, and Queens Of The Stone Age.

KO: Have you ever considered writing original music? Any teasers you want to share?

Kaleidoscope: While we don’t currently have original music out, we’ve played around with a few song drafts more than once in the past. Hopefully, we’ll be releasing some originals during the

summer, so be sure to stick around for that!

KO: How do your practice sessions look? How do you work as a band to put together

songs?

Kaleidoscope: Our practice sessions generally start by running through songs for upcoming gigs. Then, we run through new material, so our set list is constantly growing and evolving. Once we finish practising the songs themselves, we end our rehearsal by discussing any band news. Derek, our bassist, often cooks food for the rehearsals, so we eat his latest concoction while we have our conversation.

KO: In terms of performances, when can people expect to see you on stage again?

Kaleidoscope: Coming up soon, we have an acoustic gig at the Cork & Bean, which is a coffee shop in Oshawa. We’ll also be playing a few shows at our school including Artissimo and Battle Of The Bands!

KO: You have “Battle of the Bands” coming up! Tell me about what’s in store for Kaleidoscope. Why’d you pick the songs you did?

Kaleidoscope: Battle Of The Bands means a lot to us, as Kaleidoscope actually debuted at last year’s Battle Of The Bands. We plan to use this performance opportunity to showcase a

different side of Kaleidoscope. While last year, we were still developing and finding our sound as a band, this year we have branched out into heavier genres and are excited to

show off this new facet of our kaleidoscope to the world!

KO: What’s next for Kaleidoscope? Any plans or goals you’re looking forward to?

Kaleidoscope: Our primary goal as a band has always been to have a fun and safe space to grow as musicians, so we’re consistently looking for more ways we can improve and have fun playing our instruments! One way we plan on doing that is by increasing the amount of shows we play! We’re hoping to book some more shows over the coming year, so if everything goes well you’ll be seeing a lot more of us in the future!
